Can you get fake nails put on professionally & get them to paint it the colour you want?

...Or do the fake nails only come in specific colours, because i have a nice gold nail polish & i have crap nails, so i want to know if a nail technician could just put on plain fake nails then paint them the colour i wanted...
Is this possible?
& if it is, what is it called so that i can ask them to do it for me?

Which - acrylic or gel are better for it aswell? Thanks so much for all your help & so many answers so quickly too!!! :)
