Can you get around verizon's requirement of a data plan?

If i buy a verizon smartphone at amazon, can i use the phone with the plans i want but not have to comply with the $30 a month data plan requirement? Maybe have the $10 a month plan instead?
I dont want to be spending 30 a month. I want to know if I can buy a phone without a contract then go to a verizon store and make whatever kind of plan i want.
 
Nope I just got my smartphone yesterday and had to pay 30 dollars.
We called and argued.
We argued with them at the store.
We even argued about it in best buy.
But they can't do anything.
They even told us that they have been losing a lot of business because of it and said that if Verizon ever took off the data plan then it would be in a year so no use waiting around because it's not going to change for a while
