Can you get a Walmart phone and use it on Verizon without renewing your contract?

I have a Blackberry and it is not working right and I need a new one very soon. I am waiting for the iPhone to come to verizon (dont comment). sooo I heard you can go to Walmart and get a phone for a good price and take the sim card out and put it in the new phone. Is this true? Btw, I have a Storm 2 now. Please help!!!!!! I want a new phone, not used.
