Can you get a Verizon Wireless phone when other people in your family have AT&T?

Ok so, my parents and I have AT&T and I want to get a new phone from Verizon Wireless. Can I get the phone from Verizon or do my parents and I have to switch to a Verizon Wireless phone plan? Please help!!!!!
