Making one-dimensional parodies of other people's position is easy, anyone can do that. But do you truly understand the thinking of others? Could you, if asked to, "ague for the opposition" and then also explain why that thinking is wrong?
P. G. Wodehouse once wrote "It is good to know the tune to which the Devil dances." What he meant by that is that if you strongly disagree with a position it is good to fully understand why those who accept that position do so. If you do not, you do not have a strong starting point for arguing your own point of view.
