Can you Delete Multiple txts from a thread?

hey, im using the g1 and its not normaly a problem i would just delete the entire thread, but i dont wana delete the full thread cause it has some important stuff in.

I have about 1600/1700 txts in one thread and its starting to lag and crash often, is there anyway or app i can get to select multiple txts and delete them in one go so i can delete say the first 1000 txts and just be left with 600-700
 
The Messaging app has been known to spontaneously lose all of its text messages when it has to deal with lots of them.

My advice for the future would be to move "important stuff" somewhere more appropriate. At the very least, use something like SMS Backup to archive them, but depending on what the "important stuff" is you could move stuff to contacts (e.g. numbers, addresses, notes, etc), save pictures to SD card, etc. I believe SMS Backup (or maybe it was another app) can backup the SMS messages to GMail.
