Can you defrost fish in cold water by taking it out of its packaging?

My friend's called me to defrost some fish for hear to cook in about 6 hours. I've taken the fillets out of the packaging and placed them in a container of cold water. Is this right, is there anything else to do?
Thank you - should i keep the fish in the fridge, seeing as it wont be cooked for quite a few hours?
