Can you buy mintes (prepaid) with CDMA phones such as the Motorola Droid 2?

Anyone have a droid? It's a CDMA phone (no SIM card) and I want to know if you can Pay-as-you-go, you know, buy minutes instead of getting a contract. I don't like contracts and besides this is for a 13 year old. It would most likely be through Verizon. The phone was bought from the manufacturer, not through a phone carrier.
