Ok. So my boyfriend's parents are very controlling. He is trying to become more independent and wants to do college on his own so that they can no longer control him. It's been a very bad situation with them. And they basically said that they are pulling him out to go to community college and stay at home, because he isn't trying hard enough. It's a lot to get into, but they are tearing him down badly. Basically, he has decided that he wants to do school and will use financial aid to get through, because he wants to do something with his life and be his own person. However, his parents said that he can't, because they list him as dependent on their tax forms, so if they try to go against that to get financial aid, he will be in violation of federal law. They are very very well off, so he won't get much financial aid if he isn't listed as independent. He is planning to get a full time job when he gets to the university to support himself. But doesn't have one now, and they are paying for the college he is at now, but they are planning to pull him out by next semester (it's only his first semester right now). I see no helpful information on how this tax information works, how to become independent, and how to deal with this for financial aid. Does he have any options to be able to support himself and go to school or is he stuck giving in to what they say and going to live with them and drop out of school? He is doing well in school so far, has put in his transfer papers and such to get away from there (he is at a school that they deemed "suitable" for him right now, but he absolutely hates it and needs to get out. He's looked into everything and chosen a different school, which will be better for him he believes Also, the school they deemed "suitable," though he is doing good there, they have decided he is not "good enough" to go to a university now and are pulling him out and refuse to support him even there).
Sorry if that was too many words or too confusing, but that's the best I can explain it without giving specifics. Basically they are very controlling and tear him down. He wants to get out of being controlled by them and be able to support himself. Does he have any options to do so, or are they right that he cannot, because they refuse to take him off of their tax forms in an attempt to control him more?
