Can you be in the Military while still having a seperate career?

I want to join the U.S Military, but my father wants me to be let's say a lawyer or something. Is this possible? Like going to college for a year or two, then going to Marine bootcamp, and coming back continuing your other career. Of course, you're going to have to be deployed but would I still be able to do that?
