can you attend university and still compete in sports outside of university?

heyy, so my cousin alex and i were wondering if its possible to still attend university but still compete in snowboard competitions? both of are dreams are to go to the olympics [2014 Sochi] for snowboarding, well not mine anymore im on a different path. but is it possible to still go to university and compete?
im not 100% on how it works, so i thought i'd yahoo it lol

i dont mean online universities, i mean real campus type
