Can you answer a question about my Catalytic Converter - 2004 Mazda RX-8?

If the engine light is on the computer will put a code into the cars system that can be read by an engine analyzer. Take it to Auto Zone and they will check it for free and be able to tell you exactly what the problem is. I don't think it was ever a bad catalytic converter, but just a bad oxygen sensor. By the way that Cat that you let them keep was worth over a $100 scrap, and running the engine with a bad one would have done nothing more than foul your spark plugs, if that.

The dealership is rotten, there is a hidden warranty on the cat, and should have replaced it under that warranty. So I doubt very much that they are giving you right information about anything else, including installing a new motor.
Contact the Mazda hot line (1-800-222-5500) on this one and deal with them, they need to get that dealer corrected and maybe even get your RX-8 fixed. It is in their best interest too. If that dealer was not doing you right it could be that they cheated on other things that caused the problem to begin with.

Bought used in November 09, with the extended warranty. Obviously passed emissions. Check engine light came on last month. Took it to Mada. They said it needed a new motor which was covered at no cost to me. They replaced the motor. Check engine light was still on. They said I needed a new catalytic converter and they could do that for $1,200.00. I did not have that kind of money. I asked if I could get one somewhere else and have them put it on for me and still cover the warranty. They said no problem. I ordered one online which came with a guarantee. While waiting for it to come in, auto zone, a local repair shop and a different Mazda dealership all said my cat converter was not bad. I went ahead and took the new one to Mazda today anyway just to get it all over with and get my motor warrantied again. The new one is on, the check engine light is still on and Mazda says it;s because I drove the car with the bad cat converter still on while waiting for it to come in the mail. So they can't warranty it. What should I know? What am I really not being told?

That's a bunch of BS. They bent you over good. It can take the CPU up to 50 miles to adjust to new equipment. Do you know if there is a sensor on the Cat? If not that is proof that the Cat is not making the light come on. I would talk to a lawyer and see if he/she will go into the dealership with you to negotiate a repair. Never go to the dealerships for repair, even with a warranty they will make you grab your ankles and laugh at you when you leave.
