My 1999 Grand Cherokee (Limited) has a grinding noise when making hard turns. The garage says the power steering system is okay, and the transfer case needs to be replaced.
1: Does this explanation sound reasonable?
2. What should I expect to pay for a transfer case (new/used/rebuilt)?
2a. How much labor is it fair for the shop to charge me to install it?
3. Is changing the transfer case a difficult job?
4. Would it be reasonable to hire a moonlighting mechanic and work with him to install it?
One other question:
My cruise control worked when I took it in for routine maintenance, and did not work when I got it back. It has been a while since the work was done and I just found this out. I can't expect them to believe me and fix it for free...
Do you have any suggestions of what I might check? Is there a plug that might have gotten pulled, by accident or on purpose, and not replaced? Is there a fuse that could disable the cruise control if blown?
Thanks for all your help & advice.
