Can you add cooked leftovers into home garden compost bins?

If you dig 8" down into your compost pile and layer 2" of dry straw or leaves above and below the leftovers, then bury it again, you shouldn't have any problems with animals. I've built 4-5 large compost piles a year for the last 26 years, and I only had problems with rodents or raccoons a couple of times, and that was before I figured out that I had to add dry brown materials above and below the leftovers. The dry materials draw moisture out of the leftovers and encourage rapid bacterial attack.

A lot of composting "rules" can be broken if you know what you're doing. I'm always amazed that so many vegetarians think compost should be vegan. Nature breaks everything down.

Also it interferes with the reaction of the vegetative growth, and any meat will also attract rats, skunks, etc. Skunks and raccoons where we live are riddled with rabies, so if you have kids or pets, do not do it. It also can stink very bad. Meat, oil, butter etc. Steamed veggies with no sauce or anything should be okay, but not with butter or oil.
