Can Xbox 360 games cause a hardware problem?

i have recently bought a game off ebay from europe and was playing it in Australia and a little while after playing it my DVD-rom drive malfunctioned and wont read disks after it froze with the game in it, could this have been caused by the game or would it have happened even if i bought the game locally?
 
probably something wrong with the xbox itself.. i don't believe that ANY xbox would just die on ya because of a game you bought.
