Can wushu be used as self defense and a sport?

I visited a shaolin center recently and they teach wushu there. I've been wanting to learn wushu for a long time but I wasn't sure if it could be used as self defense. I want to learn a martial art that looks nice and can be used as self defense and wushu is all that came in mind.
Can anyone help? Thanks
