Can women only get pregnant during their cycle?

I'm 15, but I never got this, because my friend breeds dogs and her dogs never "make babies" unless the female is in heat. I understand that the male is attracted to the female when she was in heat. It is my understanding that when a dog is in heat, she is on her period. Correct me if I am wrong?

But in the past, I have heard people talking about not being able to have sex because of their period, and blah blah blah. Is it because you can only get pregnant during your period, or they just don't want someone inside them when they're on their period? Can you PLEASE deeply explain this to me, as I am completely lost?

There are more fertile parts of a women's cycle but pregnancy can happen at any point.
Many women feel unattractive and 'messy' during their period so decide not to have sex while they are on it.

You have to have your period to be able to get pregnant, but when it stops (till the next month) and you have sex, you can get pregnant because women with their period have an egg or something. and women just refuse to have sex during their period because its very messy, and gross. and the cramps are horrible. so who would have sex during all that?

Pregnancy can happen any time, but is most likely halfway between periods, and least likely during the period. To attempt to avoid pregnancy by timing is known as the "rhythm method".

Avoiding intercourse during monthly flow may also reduce risk of yeast infection, etc. This coincides with the Old Testament, where instructions were given to men as to when to avoid intercourse, and when to enjoy it.

In general, don't do anything that might make you a parent, if you aren't prepared to be a parent.
