Can we discuss McCaffrey's excellent characterization in the Pern novels?

Ms. McCaffrey was my first inspiration to write, after I started reading the Pern series, oh, 20-something years ago when I was 13 or 14. I can still remember *SPOILER AHEAD* bawling my eyes out when Masterharper Robinton died. Fabulous series. She is a master at creating 3-dimensional characters.

Now that I'm working on a series of my own, I'm facing the challenge of making my characters and dialogue seem as real as possible. Any tips on how you writers work out your own character problems? How do you think Anne McCaffrey's characters work so well, as compared to a flat, 2-dimensional character that you don't care so much about?

My other inspirations and favorite characters have been by Terry Brooks, Piers Anthony, Eoin Colfer, and JK Rowling. I'll respond to any discussions by adding comments in my question. Persi, TWK, and other contributors, I'm especially interested in seeing what you have to say. Thanks to everyone!
All of you, even the ones who apologized for not being much help, have been GREAT helps! I love the idea of play-acting the speaking parts to see if it works. My 15-year-old daughter thinks it sounds like fun, and wants to recruit her friends to do it. I have plenty of characters to test them on. LOL

Oh yeah, Moreta's passing was another part in her stories that made me cry. Very sad, very powerful.
