Can unlocked Iphones be used for Tmobile service?

I was recently looking on craigslist for cheap touch screen phones to use with Tmobile service and came across an ad that said they had 2 iphones that could be used with at&t and tmobile. Are they lying or can those phones actually be used for those services?
 
Unlocked iPhones can be used with T-Mobile. However, you better know what you're doing because if you ever upgrade the firmware, you will relock it.

Also, a lot of the "iPhones" on craigslist are fakes.
