The Great And Fearless Eddie Aikau

Eddia Aikau was born on the island of Maui, and his family was very poor during
his childhood days. Eddie later moved to the island of Oahu with his family. He then went
on to be awarded the position of first life guard of Waimea Bay. Not a single soul was lost while he patrolled Waimea Bay with his life. I was born and raised in the Philippines for about 9 years. My dad later petitioned me, my brother and my mom here to Hawaii in 2003 hoping for a better education and also a better future for my family. Growing up here in Hawaii was kind of hard for me in the beginning because I had to start over. English being my second language, I had a hard time speaking English and making friends, but soon got better at both gradually over time.

Aikau joined the Hokule'a, which was a double hulled canoe, to travel from Hawaii to the Tahitian Islands without using any modern navigation tools to help guide them. They had to use what was already given to them by nature, like the stars, to guide their voyage. Unfortunately, the canoe developed a leak in one of the hulls and later the canoe capsized. Eddie Aikau knew it was his responsibility to go in an attempt to get to land and get help since he has the capability and skills to do so because he's such a skilled surfer and has a lot of knowledge about the sea. Eddie's chances of getting to land is higher than anyone in the crew. I show responsibility by studying for upcoming exams that I had especially for the Hawaii State Assessment. I knew it was my responsibility to do so in order for me to achieve the good grades that I wanted

Even though Eddie knew the risk of his heroic act, he still pursued it. Eddie knew it was dangerous and that he could die from doing, so but he did it anyways. He had the courage and determination to get to land to get help. I show courage by always wanting to present first if I have to do an oral presentation in front of the class. Not a lot of people have the guts to volunteer first because they're scared to do so, but I always volunteer first to get it out of the way.

Responsibility and courage will take you far in life and they can help you achieve your wildest dreams. Eddie Aikau showed these two amazing qualities throughout his incredible journey here on earth. He showed them by saving hundreds of lives in Waimea Bay and also in his voyage that took his own life. When the Hokule'a capsized he convinced everybody that he could paddle about 10 miles back to land to get help. Eddie didn't just coward away and not do anything, he knew he had the skills, the right mindset and the knowledge to do so, and he did. Again, responsibility and courage will take you far in life, but it's these two qualities that took Eddie Aikau's life. The responsibility that I have in school to study will give me the grades that I want. The courage that I have to present first in class will help me to do good in the future because it'll give me more courage. All in all, Eddie Aikau became a hero not just for surfers but for all people of all ages around the world.
