Can they trace the ballistics of a hollow-point bullet? Just saw Phonebooth...?

The sniper says something to the effect of "hollow-point rounds have no ballistics", and I couldn't help but wonder

the reason why many people believe that hollow points leave no ballistic data is because their known to mushroom all the way down to the base of the bullet, effectively ruining the rifling pattern on the bullet. but in many cases hollow points just muchroom halfway down the bullet, leaving enough data to connect the bullet to a specific gun.

I wouldn't bet my life on it.
From game I have shot I have recovered several bullets where the rifle's lands are engraved and very readable on the bullet. Boat-tails do seem a little harder to trace due to reduced bearing surface.
