Can they change my financial aid package?

When i filed my fafsa they asked for the year 2008 taxes but i filed for myself that year but the school im attending told me that i still had to put my parent even though she didnt claim me for that year because i had a job and made quit a few. But now i dont think my financial aid award is that much and i think it has to do with my mothers information and mine put together. Can't i just tell them that my mother didnt claim me and will it change my package?
 
If you are under 24, non-military, unmarried, and/or have no children then you are a dependent student and must claim your parents financial information. It doesn't matter if you support yourself financially and if your mom doesn't claim you... financial aid has different definitions of independent and dependent student. So no, you can't tell them your mom didn't claim you... you must give her information until you are an independent student by financial aid terms (see above).
 
Who claims you on their income tax has nothing to do with your student status. There are a set of questions that determine whether you are a dependent student or an independent student. None of them ask who claims you on their income tax.
