Can the Verizon Omnia be unlocked?

Hi all,

Can anyone with Verizon's Samsung Omnia comment on whether this phone can be unlocked and used with another provider? Actually, would this phone even have a SIM card slot if it's sold through Verizon?

I didn't know if the manufacturer of cell phones makes certain production restrictions such as totally removing a SIM card slot on a phone. Any info would be appreciated. TIA.

CDMA phones are not locked in the way GSM phones are locked. Some providers put subsidy locks on their phones, but VZW does not. That said, CDMA phones generally do not have SIM slots or support SIM cards and, thus, have to be activated by the carrier (either the one that originally sold the phone or another CDMA carrier). Moreover, few CDMA carriers activate phones they do not sell. And CDMA and GSM are different and incompatible, there's no way to use a CDMA phone on a GSM carrier or vice versa.

As to whether the Omnia can be unlocked, not necessarily, because it isn't locked. Can it be used on another provider? Maybe...but only another CDMA carrier that is willing to activate it. Which carrier might that be? I have no answer for that.

Verizon Wireless tends to be one of the ONLY CDMA carriers that are willing to activate a different carrier's phone.

I have tried to get Sprint to activate an LG Chocolate I had, no can do...

I then tried Alltel (before they were Verizon)...same story.

My friend activated her LG Rumor (I believe) from Sprint on Verizon...it works fine...all the features work.

That said, since the Omnia is already a Verizon device, you may be out of luck.
