Can the United States produce enough food to feed it's Population?

The reason I ask this question, is that if the answer is yes, then why don't we just pay people to harvest enough food to accomplish this...money is irrelevant, people only need food and shelter to survive.

Secondly, if the answer is no, then I have to completely agree with the conservatives, in that we should fight for food and therefore the hardiest will bubble to the top and we will have the "best" possible population...my main question is that why don't conservatives put it like that...isn't that what they are saying?

I mean the main argument against "entitlements" seems to be that only lazy people are on wellfare...I first off dismiss this argument, while there ARE lazy people I would argue that the impoverished are some of the hardest working people out there.

Even if I admit that 90% of people on wellfare are lazy, is it worth killing the other 10% just to teach those others a lesson (especially if the answer to my question is yes)?
"...when we hear cases of caseworkers having their entire family signed up for welfare..."

This is the first I'm hearing of this, which is my point, NOT that it doesn't happen, but that it's the small minority...my claim of 90% is an extremist view to make my point of who cares on way of the other...however I think the likely statistic is more like 99% are needy and 1% cheat the system...it's just you don't read about the 99% in the paper.

You can't convince my I'm wrong here, because although you could offer countless story after story until there is a REAL study done, I don't be convinced, I just don't see this. I mean how many people do you actually know that are on wellfare? Because I have yet to meet these lazy people.
