Can the T-Mobile G1 work without the internet plan?

I want to buy the G1 (off my friend), but I do not have the internet plan for t-mobile. I only have unlimited text & shared minutes (family plan). I hope on buying the G1, but I am not sure about it because I want to be able to talk & text at least on it. So can the G1 work without the internet plan?
