Can the Di2 front derailleur work without a rear electronic?

I like the idea of the front derailleur being electronic as I can see quite a few real benefits. I'm not too concerned about the rear derailleur.

One thing that I really like about the idea of a front electronic is that I can really tidy up the front bar's cable mess. It should be quite simple to eliminate all cable mess on the left.

I will end up having to deal with a cable for the rear set because of brakes, so I might as well use a standard derailleur. There is no significant benefit for going electronic for the rear, but it's quite a bit more expensive.

I will then just have to be a bit more clever with the cable routing to allow enough play for handlebar turning, and the front cockpit will be sweet and smooth.

That's my reasoning, now the question.
I have read that the Di2 "senses" what gear the rear cog is in and adjusts the position to allow for a narrower, more precise cage without chain rub. This feature is highly desirable to me. However, do you need to use an integrated front/rear electronic system in order to get this to work?

I can't find any information on how this works.

In the end, I'll probably end up just using a standard derailleur for the front anyhow, but it would be pretty wild to have such a clean cockpit.

Thank you.
