Can the Cell really take away work from the PS3 GPU (RSX) and calculate graphics?

I've been researching and many Xbox 360 lovers keep pointing out that the PS3 supposedly does not have more powerful graphics processing than the Xbox360 due to the GPU being inferior.

But now I've come across information that the Cell is not your typical CPU and that it can actually take a lot of work away from the RSX (the RSX can offload work to the PS3's SPUs). So the PS3's Cell can calculate and process graphics?

I heard that originally the PS3 was not even supposed to have a GPU but only the Cell doing all of the work.

So how does it work? They can just use the seven 3.2 GHZ SPEs of the Cell for anything they want to? Graphics? Physics etc.?

The cell is the fastest processor in the world. It is used in the IBM super computers. PS3 has Blu-Ray, you must have a good graphics card for that... Xbox just has regular DVD. A dvd also looks better on my ps3 than the 360... PS3 is an AMAZING system... I also think it's out before its time; kinda like the N64 was. It's hard to make games for the PS3 since the technology is so "new."
