How to Study Using the PQ4R Method
Everyone has their own way to study. Me for example, I often cram right before a test. Some read through the chapter once and they are ready for the test, while others don’t even need to study at all. The best way to study is by using the PQ4R Method. Preview, Question, Read, Reflect, Recite, and Review.
Previewing subject matter (getting a general idea of what is being covered, before reading through it) is very helpful. By thumbing through the chapter being read and writing down the bold headings you are increasing your knowledge of what to study. This then leads into questioning.
Questioning and answering the material is often a huge help. By skimming/reading through the material, you can create questions. You may write down terms from the chapter and define them, or you can write down the bold headings and answer them. This then takes us into reading.
Reading the chapter gives you the opportunity to answer the questions you wrote down. While reading it is also very helpful to jot down notes on what you are reading, after you answer you questions. You can review and recite these notes later. After reading, you can then reflect on the material.
Reflecting on subject matter is an important way to understand and remember it. As you are reading it is helpful to think of examples and create mental images of the things you are studying. One way to reflect is to relate old information with new information. Another way is by reciting the information you just learned.
Reciting information can help you memorize things. Whether you recite it silently or aloud, you are hearing the material over and over again, which helps it stick. Most of us learned the alphabet through reciting it over and over again. You may also quiz one another aloud to help remember the material.
You should study over a period of time. If you have a test on Friday, you should start studying on Monday. Cramming before a test can make you nervous; this may cause you to do worse.
