Can someone tell me why my PC Sims 2 game runs choppy when I play it?

My PC game The Sims 2 runs choppy while I am playing. Can someone tell me why this happens and how I can fix it? I already tried the patch and it didn't really help. I heard it might help if I uninstall everything, including the exspansion packs, and start all over again. does anyone know if this is true?
