Can someone tell me the pros and cons of flashing a phone?

I have the HTC Fuze from AT&T. I've seen some cool custom ROM online and really want to try it out, but I want to know ahead of time about the pros and cons of this? Will it void my warranty or contract with AT&T? What are the chances of my phone breaking down completely? Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.
 
Well in my opinion you can cooler things for your phone and everything, but on the other hand if you don't know much about it you can mess up your phone so taking the risk is up to you....
