It cannot be the Mona Lisa. Published criticism/analysis of the painting must exist. The assignment is to present a portrait painting as a masterpiece and explain why this is so.

I've never taken an Art History class and I'm totally drawing a blank. Can anyone help?

The White Crucifix, by Marc Chagall
or even The Yellow Crucifixion, by Marc Chagall
Both are controversial and I'm sure you could find a lot of information on both, probably White over Yellow.

American Gothic by Grant Wood.
It reflects the serious nature of survival in America. Those two ain't having a great time; however it seems due to hard work and determination they have a home (background) and a way to make a living (pitchfork). Unless they are feeling threatened and that pitchfork is a weapon LOL!

Try looking up Vincent van Gogh....he did several self-portraits...even after he cut off his own ear!!! He recorded in his self portraits his emotional and physical states, and he also used them to try out new techniques.

I'd go with the Arnolfini Wedding portrait (aka some other titles) by Jan van Eyck for its symbolism and complexity. It's a very interesting work and should make for ample discussion. It's very widely known, mentioned in more or less every general art book, and should be easy to find information on. Even if you try googling it, you'll probably come up with loads of results. Good luck, and let us know what you decide to go for.
