This is my essay for my Year 8 extra english class (only four students partake in) I need someone to check that it is acceptable. I stated my year so you don't expect a year 12 essay or something!
The definition for sexism, a term coined in the sometime in the 20th century, is the belief that one individual/gender/sex is less important or valuable than the opposing sex. It can also sometimes refer to prejudice towards the application of stereotypes or masculinity in men, or femininity in women (according to wikipedia). It can also apparently be called ‘chauvinism.’ Discrimination is different, as it is not selective, it covers all (racism, ageism etc).
Sexism is an issue that can and most certainly does appear and occur in any place. Sexism that occurs against women (and men) will most probably always appear whether we like it or not. It has been in the workplace, in the house, or anywhere since pretty much time began, and does not look like it will be stopping any time soon. Everyone has different opinions and different viewpoints when sexism comes to mind that include, but are not limited to: Almost all sexism is towards women, and that men can also be affected by it, and are unfairly judged.
The first ever recorded instance of sexism occurred, supposedly, with Adam and Eve, and how Eve was created through Adam’s rib bone. From scripture, Eve's role was to be considered as a servant and a temptress, the sole reason why Adam ate the apple. Consequently Eve is blamed as being the reason mankind is not living in a paradise. Sexism has continued throughout ancient history and continues to occur in our own environment to this day.
Sexism is defined as the discrimination or hatred against people based on their gender rather then their individual merits. This is shown though a common modern day event; a girl cannot play in a hockey league because of her gender (unless it is female only team), similarly a male cannot be in most cheerleading squads because of his gender.
The workplace/workforce is the most common area where sexism can be found. Sexism is evident in unfair recruitment, unequal pay (almost always concerning women), and intimidating behavior towards work colleagues. In 1970, The Equal Pay Act was introduced. This act was to make employers give out equal pay to both female and male staff, regardless of any circumstances, then afterwards the Sex Discrimination Act was put into place to enforce fair recruitment policies. If an individual feels that these acts are not being followed, they can appeal to the Court Of Justice. Despite the attempts to make the workplace/workforce fair, equal pay and opportunities for women are still not being achieved. In 2001, women were paid only 73% of what their male counterparts received.
It will always be perceived that women take on the role of the cook, the maid, the nanny, the chauffer, and that they should allow the men (husbands in this case) to be the primary ‘breadwinner’ of the family, so no matter what, this will most probably be expected for women to continue on doing.
@JakeFarsh, for this essay we had to make up up our own question and mine was Sexism-Why are women much more targeted as opposed to men, and why? There would be not much point defending men in this question, though I do agree with you, I am not intendingly discriminating against men as is said that 'Men can also be affected by sexism, and are often unfairly judged because of it.'
