Can someone help me with Facebook Chat Problems?

For some reason everytime I click someones name on my facebook chat to talk to them it automatically shows them as offline. When i log back on they are still online. Only when i click on their name to chat they go offline so I can't chat with anyone on facebook. HOW DO I FIX THIS!!!!!! HELPP
