Can someone help me with a Facebook Chat problem I have?

OK, on my Facebook a while ago I opted to have my Chat to show me always offline, now I cant get it to work again. The only way it now works is if i click into Facebook Chat and i stay there to chat, if i am in another application it says i am offline and i do not get the notification like my friends do at bottom of page to say how many friends are online.

Anyone please know how to fix this as it is a real annoyance for me.
