can someone help me or tell me how to do something? It requires PHP. I don't know how.?

I've been working on my website over the last two days, and it is steadilly improving. Unfortunately, I'm running into a dead end: PHP. I know html and css. I have no clue about php though, and I need to make a login button say "logout" when a user is logged on (login when the user is signed off). I've already created the buttons, but the script is confusing and I have already had to revert back to a backup, like 5 times now. please help!
