Can someone help me about getting a new phone but?

Ok my mom is giving me her t-mobile phone. It is a bill phone and she said she is getting me a new number. Ok will i be able to get another phone but keep the sim card and put it in my new phone. Because i want a blackberry flip. or i have to keep her ugly broke looking phone :(
like if i buy the blackberry do i have to make another contract
