I decided to practice a sample essay and any input would be help me alot. I had trouble managing my time (not finished) and its alot longer than usual because I did it on the computer. Planning lets people impose order on the chaotic processes of making or doing something new. Too much planning, however, can lead people to follow the same predetermined course of action, to do things the same way they were done before. Creative thinking is about breaking free from the way that things have always been. That is why it is vital for people to know the difference between good planning and too much planning.Adapted from Twyla Tharp, The Creative HabitAssignment
oes planning interfere with creativity? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations. Some argue that structure and planning are the antitheses of creativity and innovation. I however, cannot agree with this statement. In what way does planning impediment creativity? Indeed I believe planning to function well with creativity. After all, what is a bright idea if it is not realized through planning and effort? Structure does not inhibit new ideas but instead acts as a means to put the thought into applicable effect. My belief is supported by countless examples throughout history and the world. Planning fits beautifully in the epitome of creativity, the world of fine and performing arts. As a violinist of 8 years I have been told all my life to “make it beautiful”. Performing is a world where expressiveness is key and phrasing is of the highest importance. Every note must be accompanied with vibrato and every stroke of the bow must adhere to accents and crescendos. However, there are other components to my music that cannot spring from creativity alone, including intonation. Intonation is simply the result of heavy practice, or in other words of heavy planning. Ultimately when one goes on stage to perform, no amount of dynamic contrast and soaring melody can salvage out of tune notes. To be beautiful, music must be a marriage of creativity and prior effor and planning in equal parts.History also confirms my beliefs. In the 1940s, the United States was suffering one of the most devastating economic downturns in history. However, a election soon took place, an election that could have made all the difference. The new President, walking into an office already heavy with reponsibility, was Franklin Delenor Roosevelt. He conducted meetings after meetings and produced a revolutionary plan that would prove to reverse the economy, the New Deal. This plan was one of the most innovative things composed in the history of the nation. Many of the President’s comtemporaries voiced open disdain at the “ridiculous” plan. However, this plan was also the result of weeks, months of planning. Without innovation, the plan would not have worked, and without planning the plan could not have come to be. Planning was the means to carry out the thought. For these reasons, I believe creativity and planning to be able to work together well. Indeed, often the two must coexist.
