Can someone explain the paddle shifters on a Honda Fit Sport?

All right, so I'm going to be getting a Honda Fit Sport (2010 model) here pretty soon. I'm going to get the automatic but it has (And I've seen in person) the paddle shifters behind the steering wheel. So are these like a clutchless manual? Do I have to choose between automatic, or manual shifting with those? Thanks!
