Can someone clarify the term "next to" used in this context?

If I say:
"Next to you, I'm the smartest person in biology class."
it means that the only person in biology class who is smarter than me is you.

If I say:
"Next to you, I'm a genius."
it means that you're so much dumber than me that you make me look like a genius in comparison.

I'm kind of perplexed about this. Can someone help me understand the usage of the phrase better? What makes the difference in meaning? A thorough explanation would be most appreciated.
Edit: After the first reply I feel the need to ask people not to reply if you're more clueless to me. Seriously, GDIAF.
Edit: more clueless than me***
To the second person who answered: I know. I said that in my original post. I'm looking for information beyond that which is in my question, please.
