If I say:
"Next to you, I'm the smartest person in biology class."
it means that the only person in biology class who is smarter than me is you.
If I say:
"Next to you, I'm a genius."
it means that you're so much dumber than me that you make me look like a genius in comparison.
I'm kind of perplexed about this. Can someone help me understand the usage of the phrase better? What makes the difference in meaning? A thorough explanation would be most appreciated.
