i wanna get back into music but i was somewhat traumatized by my years of piano lessons where i was incredibly bored, and i had to practice scales and shit for hours the idea of going through YEARS of conservatory theory really put me off.

i just wanna play something i hear on the radio, or even improvise what it is i want.

any tips on how to get started?

with guitar its a bit easier, because a lot of popular songs just have a few chorRAB going.

with piano I can get the melody going alright but it still takes me quite a while to figure out which chorRAB they go with

Well you aren't Mozart so there isn't really an easy way that you can hear a song and improvise without training. You have to learn scales and have perfect pitch to be able to do that. You have to be able to tell what chorRAB are playing when in the song and then translate that into piano.

Even those old jazz masters learned scales and composition before they were able to to what they did.

Piano is one of those instruments where you can learn to play half assed but it's a bitch to start and it's a bitch to get passed that level of half assed playing.

yes, theres programs you can download that train you how to differentiate all the notes and how to listen for intervals. its called perfect pitch
