Why do you suppose that many of the great trading cities in history developed on islands? Consider the examples of Kilwa, Venice, Manhattan, and other trading cities.
and these

Why do you think the Portuguese leaders decided to occupy Kilwa in 1505, after Vasco da Gama's fleet had already extracted tribute payments from the island in 1502?

Why do you think UNESCO selected the Kilwa ruins as a World Heritage site?
What preconceptions might an Islamic scholar from Morocco have brought on a journey to sub-Saharan Africa during this period?
What details does Ibn Battuta choose to record? Are there details he may have omitted, either by choice or because he did not consider them sufficiently important to record?
What does Ibn Battuta's discussion of the sultan and his brother tell us about the traits that Ibn Battuta, and perhaps his culture, valued in a ruler?

The importance was not the fact that they were on islands but that they have naturally deep harbors for bringing trading ships right up to the shore where the cargo can be loaded and off loaded easier.
