Can sex only be passionate if you respect each other?

Hey, Im a 17 year old boy, and the other day I was having this (serious) discussion with a friend who has had sex (I haven't) and he said that, in his opinion, sex can only be passionate if you respect each other.
Do you agree with this?
If so, why?
if not, why?
 
Yes. It can only be passionate if you both care about each other's needs during the act (and before and after).
 
Disagree, because technically you could be passionate only about sex but not the person your having sex with.....i.e. you have a passion for bowling doesn't mean your in love with the ball and pins right?
