After looking that the "Golden Turd" and "Mind Quad" segments of American Dad, I wonder if Seth Macfarlane and his group reallycould make a serious drama... if they wanted to. Well, that's what I see. I guess comedies sell better.

"And Then There Were Fewer" had a nice mix of comedy and drama. but teh drama parts actually was really well done, especially the ending, of course.

I?m sure they could take up writing novels if they really wanted.

Most animated drama happens on the big screen, it would be kind of odd seeing anything much more serious on tv then American Dad, unless it has super heroes.
Tell the truth, I think they may find it dull to make anything that goes long being all serious.
The two examples you gave have vary absurd premises.

What about Disney's Gargoyles? Or Samurai Jack on Cartoon Network? They both did have some humor, but it still stands.

It could also prove the point of many that western cartoons on TV CAN be as serious as Japanese/Eastern Cartoons. Just a nip-tick.

A while back he was supposed to be writing a comedy-drama movie about a guy that goes to his dysfunctional family's reunion, but haven't heard anything about it lately.
