Can S60 phones suspend running Java and other apps?

Well, obviously I've never owned a S60 series os it's a newbie question. I'm looking to be able to browse the web, suspend the browser when I need to put the phone away and be able to resume the web session where I left off. Either with the native browser or via Opera Mini.

Also, does the OS support global text copy and paste? Thanks!

hmmm, let's clarify:

1. If you close the browser, then when you open it again, it'll be back at the homepage. It does automatically bookmark pages for you, and you can background it (similar to minimizing on windows).

2. "global" copy/paste. Yes, but there's some screens where you can't select text. But you could copy a url from an sms and paste it into the browser, stuff like that.

1. I figured the built-in native browser works like this but how about if I install the Opera Mini Java browser? Or Java games? I just want to be sure that if I need to exit those in a hurry, - or just close the phone - that I can resume those apps. In that case everything should be right where I left it.

2. That's good enough.

just hit menu key twice and it will go to the home screen and leave whatever else open in the background. then hold the menu key to go back to your apps or to switch apps

If it's important that you break your connection (over EDGE or whatever), you can leave the application running in the background and close the connection in the connection manager. This will at least save some battery if you cut the open EDGE connection from working in the background while you're not using it.
