First of all, you really need to figure out what type of Puffer fish you have. Some puffers must live in brackish water and some should not be housed with any other fish especially those not of their own species. Goldfish are cold water fish and I do not know of any puffer species that are cold water so they definitely should not be housed together. If you can, take a photograph of it for us so we can identify it if you can not.

Most puffers need a very varied diet of mainly protein enriched foods such as young snails, krill, brine shrimp, blood worms, earth worms, insects etc. They need young snails especially to ware down their teeth. If the teeth get too long, they will not be able to eat and will eventually die. I don't know how good the mussels would be for your puffer, but it's probably much better than goldfish flakes. Keep in mind that most if not all puffers will never take flakes, pellets or wafers and truly need live or freeze dried foods.

Also, most puffers are wild caught which means they can be harboring diseases. If your puffer's belly is sunken in and grey this could be a sign of illness from internal parasites, malnutrition and possibly improper salinity.

So, basically there is some changes in order and you especially need to find out what kind it is. They are a very special fish and need special care. Please get back to use on it's species.

I just started up a aquarium for my son. He picked out a really cool mini puffer fish thats kind of gray and has black spots. Such a small little guy... All he does is swim like a mad man around the tank (not bothering the other fish) and then hides under the rocks... They told me at the pet store he will eat the flakes I was giving the goldfish...however I havent seen him eat and im wurried hes going to die..

I got some mussels out of the freezer that are like 4 times his size, took the meat out and microwaved it... cut it up very small and threw it in there... do you think that will be ok? Or should i do it a different way or get different food?
