Can potential landlord look up my criminal history using my social security number?

Can a landlord legally use a social security number to check my criminal history? Is there a service they have to pay for to be able to do this?
Also, I know that there are state websites that allow free access to criminal records using people's names, but my name is spelled wrong in accordance to the charges, so when I am searched on this site, I come up clean. So I am referring to social security searches only.
