Can Pain Pills..?

I listen to this band named Pantera a lot. (It's my favorite band), and their vocalist had a really good voice up until he started taking High powered Pain Killers for his back. And now his voice is slurred, slow, and monotone. He claims it was the pain pills, but is this possible?

He also did Heroin for some time..
