Newfoundlands are a mountain breed dog that was used for hearding in mountain regions, so yes, a newfie would be good for hiking, especially in cool weather. And I'd actually let the dog carry a light backpack, they are working dogs after all.

I'm thinking of getting a dog and have always admired the Newfoundlands I've met and love their size and temperament. Drooling doesn't bother me. I'm just out of college and live in an apartment. Being a Geologist I have to do field work and in general love to hike in the mountains and go fishing. I've read and heard these dogs love to swim which is cool so it will love to go with me when I go fishing even though I'll probably never catch anything because of it. I was wondering if anyone would know how well they can handle going with me in the field doing work or going hiking. I'd backpack everything with me and whatever the dog needs. I don't want it to carry anything but itself. I thank anyone who responds!
