Can my parents read my texts online?(Verizon)?

my parents told me that they are reading my text messages online. Can they really do that? Or are they playing games with me? Some stuff that I texted about,yet never told them, they spoke to me about, but a lot of other stuff** I texted, they never said anything!

Also, for how long are the messages stored online if they are?
